2020 was due to be our 10th consecutive trip to The Netherlands. Unfortunately, world events and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has put a stop to that. Rather than dwell on what might have been, I thought I’d take the opportunity to look back at our previous trips to The Netherlands.

We spent the second week of our Netherlands 18 trip at the place that’s starting to feel like our second home, Duinrell. We’ve been going to Duinrell for quite a few years now. There’s many reasons why we go, one of which is the proximity of places like Madurodam.
In my view, no stay at Duinrell is complete without a trip to Leiden. We’ve been there plenty of times and I’ve covered the route previously in 2015. 2017 saw us back in Duinrell for what was our seventh visit. I’ve covered Wassenaarse Slag previously in a post from 2015, though that was the route from The Hague. This year marks the sixth time we’ve visited Duinrell. We spent the second week of our holiday here, after spending the first week in Vlissingen. Given the number of times we’ve been, it’s surprising that we’ve never been to Katwijk before. We decided to remedy this with a ride there on quite a sunny day.

I have to admit, I’ve got a bit of a fondness for Dutch bikes. I don’t know if it’s the sheer practicality of them, the robustness or the fact that they’re difficult to get in the UK. But I can’t help but like them, old or new, two wheels or more.
