With some time to spare on our journey back from the Netherlands, we decided to take a detour through Zeeland. This south eastern area in the Netherlands is famous for its islands and peninsulas. These features gives the province its name, Zeeland meaning Sealand.

For the final full day of our Duinrell trip of 2025, we headed back to Leiden again. This would be the third time during our stay. We always enjoy visiting the city as well as the ride there, so any excuse to go back.

Having been to Den Haag the previous day, we decided to return to the city on the subsequent day. Though with a plan to visit Kunstmuseum Den Haag, the city’s museum of modern art.

As the closest big city, Den Haag is a regular visit when we’re staying at Duinrell. Being just 13 km away on bike, it’s a fairly manageable ride, with multiple routes to choose from. With us staying at Duinrell for two weeks, we’d end up going there a couple of times on this trip.

I had some spare time and the was sun shining. So I decided to head out on a ride to Scheveningen, the seaside town in Den Haag, southwest of Duinrell. This is somewhere we’ve been a few times in the past, but not actually that many. Last time was during our 2024 trip, as part of a ride to Den Haag and Madurodam.

With us spending two weeks at Duinrell, we ended up returning to Leiden multiple during our 2025 trip. With it being a fairly short ride away and such a pleasant place to spend time, how could we not?!

Being the closest city, Leiden is a popular choice for a day trip away from to Duinrell. Indeed, it’s somewhere we have been to every time we’ve stayed there and I’ve written about our rides to the city numerous times in 2015, 2017, 2022 and 2024.

With a birthday in the group to celebrate, we arranged for lunch out at Strandpaviljoen De Watering in Katwijk aan Zee, overlooking the beach. Getting there would obviously involve getting on the bikes and enjoying the very pleasant ride across the dunes.
