Since we’ve been going to Duinrell, we usually try to fit in a ride to the city of Leiden when we stay there, and 2022 was no exception. I’ve previously written about our trips there back in 2015 and 2017, so this might be quite familiar. Though with this being The Netherlands, there’s always one or two new things to see along the way.

Netherlands 20: 2012

2020 was due to be our 10th consecutive trip to The Netherlands. Unfortunately, world events and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has put a stop to that. Rather than dwell on what might have been, I thought I’d take the opportunity to look back at our previous trips to The Netherlands.

Duinrell, a family and cycling friendly holiday park in The Netherlands

We’ve been going to Duinrell now for quite a few years, since our first visit back in 2012. We have been to The Netherlands on a number of occasions previously, mostly in and around Amsterdam. We came across Duinrell while looking for places to go, we’d previously had a day trip to The Hague and it looked like a nice place to spend a bit more time, so we decided to give it a go.

Netherlands 15: The route to Leiden

Leiden is a university city about 20km north of The Hague and about 10km away from Duinrell by bike. The route from Duinrell is a great example of Dutch bike infrastructure, with most of the route being on segregated cycle paths away from the road. The points at which you have to share the road are generally pretty quiet and you can expect to see very few cars.
