Back on the Bridgewater Way and Trans Pennine Trail – March 2017

Almost as if to plan, the first weekend after the start of spring arrived with glorious sunshine. So it’d be wrong not to get out on the bikes with the family and some friends. This is first ride we’ve had for a while as family, rubbish weather and busy weekends have meant we’ve not had chance.

Netherlands 16: The route to Katwijk aan Zee

This year marks the sixth time we’ve visited Duinrell. We spent the second week of our holiday here, after spending the first week in Vlissingen. Given the number of times we’ve been, it’s surprising that we’ve never been to Katwijk before. We decided to remedy this with a ride there on quite a sunny day.

Netherlands 16: The route to Middelburg

While staying in Vlissingen, we decided to take a trip on the bikes to Middelburg, about 8km to the north east. Middelburg is the capital city of Zeeland and dates back to around the 8th century. As with a lot of the Dutch coastline, about a third of the city was destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt.

Netherlands 15: The route to Leiden

Leiden is a university city about 20km north of The Hague and about 10km away from Duinrell by bike. The route from Duinrell is a great example of Dutch bike infrastructure, with most of the route being on segregated cycle paths away from the road. The points at which you have to share the road are generally pretty quiet and you can expect to see very few cars.

Netherlands 15: Around Duinrell

The second week of our recent trip to The Netherlands, we spent at Duinrell. This was actually the fifth time we’ve stayed at Duinrell in one form or another, in the last four year, so as you can probably guess, we’re big fans! We’ve also persuaded a number of friends to go there, who on the whole have loved it.

Netherlands 15: The route to Wassenaarse Slag

While we were staying in The Hague, we had friends staying at Duinrell for the week. Given it was a nice day, we decided to head on over to the beach, and as we were equipped with bikes, we headed to Wassenaarse Slag, which is about 4km from Duinrell and about 14km from where we were staying in The Hague.
