If I’m honest, I’ve already done this route to death already, so why am I back with another post covering a ride to the beach at Wassenaarse Slag? Well, largely as this was an evening ride, with a few nice shots of the sun setting over sea.
Given I’ve already written about Wassenaarse Slag in 2015, 2017, 2018, 2022 and 2024, I will keep the details here to a minimum. If you’d like to know more about the closest beach to Duinrell, I recommend looking at my earlier posts.
As I mentioned in the first post in the series, we weren’t quite as lucky with the weather in 2025, as we had been in recent years. We’d become used to at least a couple of days of beach weather, to laze about in the sun at Wassenaarse Slag, but it wasn’t to be this year.
No matter, we’d still make the most of access to the lovely beach nearby with a couple of evening rides there, one time for for drinks and another to eat. While Wassenaarse Slag is a relatively small and low-key beach, it does have a small selection of bars serving food and drinks.
Setting off in the evening following an afternoon shower, we made our way through the dunes, along the all too familiar route to the beach. As I’ve mentioned before, the route across the dunes is surprisingly hilly, which catches a few people, with many expecting as it’s the Netherlands, everywhere is completely flat.

Arriving a little after 8pm, we were surprised to find we wouldn’t have long, as the bars were shutting at 9pm. Nevertheless, we’d make the most of the time we had and parked ourselves up out the front of Luchtig aan zee and ordered drinks.

We had a lovely time relaxing outside the bar, watching the sun setting over the beach and sea, and people making the most of the evening. While the weather wasn’t brilliant, there were still plenty of people coming and going.

We made those single drinks last as long as we could, before we made our way back to Duinrell. There was an absolutely wonderful sky as we made our way along the dune route. It was almost dark by the time we arrived back at Duinrell, as we finished the evening off with a few more drinks at our cabin.

Back to Wassenaarse Slag for tea
We returned for second time to Wassenaarse Slag during our 2025 trip, a few days after our first ride there. This time, we planned to eat, so made sure we got down there a little earlier, though it was still in the evening.

As last time, the weather wasn’t amazing, but it was good enough to sit out on the front, with views of the sea while we ate. So we parked ourselves up at Beachclub BAIT, which is a bar we’ve been to plenty of times before.

The menu at BAIT is typical for the beach bars in the Netherlands, so expect Dutch options, such as broodje sandwiches, bitterballen and poffertjes, there’s then more international options, such as burgers, salads and American pancakes.

We really enjoyed our meal as well as the beer, which they have a decent selection of Dutch and Belgian beers. The only thing that was missing was a bit of sunshine!
