In July 2025, we made our way to Duinrell for what would be our twelfth visit, meeting up with family, as we’d done in recent years. As before, we’d be staying in a Eurocamp holiday home, a Comfort XL and we’d be driving over with our bikes.
In a break from recent tradition, we’d arranged to spend the whole two weeks at Duinrell, rather than staying a week somewhere else in the Netherlands. Partly, this was as we knew the kids would enjoy that more, but also to give us more opportunity to explore nearby.
In addition to hanging around Duinrell, we ended up having multiple trips to the nearby cities of Leiden and Den Haag, as well as to Delft, Rotterdam and Amsterdam, with me cycling to all but the last one.
While we didn’t get any proper beach weather during our trip, we did make visits to the local beaches at Wassenaarse Slag, Katwijk aan Zee and Scheveningen, which meant lots of riding through the dunes.
Two weeks at Duinrell
Regular readers will no doubt be familiar with our yearly trips to the holiday and amusement park Duinrell in the town of Wassenaar. In 2025, instead of staying at an additional location in the Netherlands as we had done for a number of years, we’d arranged to spend the full two weeks at Duinrell.
Riding the Velostrada from Leiden to Den Haag
Inspired once again by one of Bicycle Dutch’s post, on our first full day at Duinrell, I headed out for a quick ride along Velostrada, a direct cycling route between the cities of Leiden and Den Haag.
Evening ride to the beach at Wassenaarse Slag
If I’m honest, I’ve already done this route to death already, so why am I back with another post covering a ride to the beach at Wassenaarse Slag? Well, largely as this was an evening ride, with a few nice shots of the sun setting over sea.
Riding from Duinrell to Rotterdam
Despite staying fairly close by, we’ve only actually been to Rotterdam twice over the years, prior to our 2025 trip. We first went there in 2013, when the kids were small, then three of us returned in 2022, making a multimodal trip there.
Loop ride around Vlietland
With a bit of time to spare, while everyone was doing their own thing, I had chance for a quick afternoon ride. Being somewhere we’d briefly ridden to in 2022, I fancied exploring the area around Vlietland, a recreational area with lakes formed from the extraction of sand.
Riding from Duinrell to Delft
The wonderful city of Delft is somewhere we’ve been a few times over the years, with our last visit there in 2022. While we’ve got there by various means, including bike, tram and car, we’ve never cycled there directly from Duinrell.
Riding to Katwijk aan Zee for lunch
With a birthday in the group to celebrate, we arranged for lunch out at Strandpaviljoen De Watering in Katwijk aan Zee, overlooking the beach. Getting there would obviously involve getting on the bikes and enjoying the very pleasant ride across the dunes.
Riding from Duinrell to Leiden
Being the closest city, Leiden is a popular choice for a day trip away from to Duinrell. Indeed, it’s somewhere we have been to every time we’ve at Duinrell and I’ve written about it numerous times in 2015, 2017, 2022 and 2024.
A day trip to Amsterdam
We’d not been back to Amsterdam, since our 2022 trip to Zaandam and the others in our group had never been there, despite visiting the Netherlands multiple times, so we were definitely due a trip there.
